Increased Likelihood

of Type 2 Diabetes

What is genetic risk?

Your genetic likelihood falls in the range that is considered typical. But your overall likelihood also depends on factors like weight, diet, and exercise. This means it's important to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

See your estimated likelihood broken down by age.

What is diabetes?

Type 2 diabetes is a chronic health condition that affects how your body turns food into energy. When you eat, your body breaks down carbohydrates into sugar (glucose). Glucose is your body's main source of energy. Insulin, a hormone made by your pancreas, helps glucose get into your cells to be used for energy.

What environmental factors increase the risk of type 2 diabetes?

In addition to genetics, there are also environmental factors that can increase the risk of type 2 diabetes. These factors include:

  • Being overweight or obese

  • Having a sedentary lifestyle

  • Eating a diet high in unhealthy fats, sugar, and processed foods

  • Having a family history of type 2 diabetes

  • Being of African American, Hispanic, American Indian, or Asian American descent

  • Having polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)

  • Taking certain medications, such as steroids
